On New Year’s Eve 2015, my husband and I loaded up our 7 suitcases and checked in at the airport in Warsaw, Poland to begin our trip back to the United States. img_8589 2016 was a new beginning….back in our own house, with a new job for my husband, a possible new job for me and a boatload of memories, travel and friendships to look back on and blog about.  (Read about that here This Is A Test)

Reflecting back on 2016, I can say that right now it seems like it flew by…..but in reality, there were times when it just dragged on and on and on.  Continue reading →

Its Been A Wild Ride!

23 Saturday Jul 2016

A year ago, I decided to start a blog to document our move to Bydgoszcz, Poland.  That move evolved into a roller coaster ride of ups and downs, highs and lows and crazy turns and loops.  What my husband and I thought was going to happen, didn’t.   What we thought might be a five year adventure living overseas was cut short….way short.  So we just decided to enjoy the ride while it lasted and cram in as much traveling and sight-seeing as we could.

So what has happened in my life in the last twelve months?  I have 8,249 memories. (read to the end to find out the significance of that number)  But here is a quick recap. Continue reading →

Postcards, Seoul, South Korea, Souvenirs

When you travel to a new city, country or tourist attraction what kind of souvenirs do you buy?  When you come home is your suitcase packed full of souvenirs? Do you leave extra room in your suitcase when you are packing for a trip so you’ll have room for souvenirs?  I tend to overpack….so I don’t usually have a lot of extra space in my suitcase. But I don’t really need it because my favorite things to bring home don’t take up a lot of room or cost a lot of money.  I don’t want to have a house full of “stuff” that collects dust.  Or have to sit on my suitcase to close it.  I told you I went shopping in my previous post, but I didn’t tell you what I was looking for or what I bought.  So here is a list of what I brought home from this trip (and bring home from most every other trip I take):  Think FLAT and PAPER. Over the week-end when my daughter wasn’t working, we wandered into the city to do a little shopping and spend some of this.  I just love the look of foreign currency!IMG_2058She also wanted to take me to the City Hall Building.   Sounds a little strange to want to visit City Hall, but the new building has a unique architectural design….it resembles a “wave” and has an observation deck good for city viewing. Seoul, South Korea

Finally getting to a place where I can get a few thoughts down.  So here goes….A month ago I took a trip…a long trip….one 13+ hour flight to Tokyo, Japan, and then another shorter 2 1/2 hour plane trip to Seoul, South Korea.  This little fluff ball, Lane,  also took the trip.  She was ready to be reunited with her “Mom”.IMG_0548Lane is a seasoned traveller, and was so excited to travel again that she hopped into her carrier while we were driving to the airport.  She has never done that before.  I think she was ready to be going to her new home. This Is A Test

I’ve always wondered if people are actually reading my blog….not that I’m a great writer, because I’m not, and if truth be told, English and writing essays were my least favorite and worst grades in school (thank you God for Cliff Notes) as I’m more of a math-science girl.

I started this blog because my husband’s job was taking us to a place most people had never heard of…Bydgoszcz, Poland.  In fact the most commonly asked question when we were telling our friends was “Who moves to Poland?  People actually move to Poland?”  Well, yes they do and so we did. Christmas Markets – Vienna Style

Christmas Markets, Schoenbrunn Palace, VIenna

One of the first things that you get introduced too…or hear about…in Europe are the Christmas Markets.  They run from late November through the Advent season and sometime into early January.  In some cities and towns, it might just be for one day….but in others, they are an everyday event.  People come from all over to experience the market…sometimes going to other countries, because the “goods” are cheaper than in their own country.   They can be anything from a few wooden stalls erected on a street or small square to the huge markets that  can boast over 280 different stalls filled with food, handmade baked goods, decorations, and more!

Since we have been busy traveling the past few week-ends, we have been able to experience the Christmas Markets first hand.  Our first experience was at Schoenbrunn Palace in Vienna.  We arrived on a Friday afternoon to view the Palace, so having the market there was an added bonus.IMG_6872 Continue reading →

Checking Out Churches

Bydgoszcz, Church of The Sacred Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Evangelical Methodist Church

All you have to do it wander down the street, take a few wrong turns on your way to a market square that you haven’t been to before, with a friend who has been there but doesn’t quite remember where it is, and ta-da! You’ve walked by four churches you’ve never seen before.

The first one, I’ve driven by multiple times (ok, ridden by….David was driving), but it’s not readily apparent that it’s a church.  It’s the local Mormon church and it’s neatly tucked in-between some other buildings. IMG_6457 Continue reading →

TBT – The Drive to Krakow

Krakow

It’s TBT!  (Throw Back Thursday) Well, I’m not throwing back very far…only to the week-end of August 14-16.  David and I went to Krakow that week-end…our first week-end trip.  There’s soooo much to see and do there that we drove instead of taking the train so we could have a little extra time for sight-seeing.  But it didn’t really work out quite that way.  What our Google Maps and Waze apps said was a 5 1/2 hour drive actually took 9 hours!  First the oil light came on and we had to stop and put oil in the car.  David,  being a good former Boy Scout, was prepared and had a bottle of oil in the car.  But he didn’t count on forgetting that his cell phone was in his lap when he got out of the car.  It fell onto the cobblestone pavement and shattered the screen.  A few choice words that I have never heard David say before in the 37 years we have been married just might have slipped out.  But it was still working! (yeah!).

So now we’re driving along admiring the countryside (and the weird things on the side of the road, like this tank)…IMG_4527 when a strange noise starts coming from the car when we hit little bumps in the road.  Continue reading →
